World Class Baseball (TurboGrafx-16)

World Class Baseball

Acclaimed for its steady game play, World Class Baseball is the definitive baseball game on the TurboGrafx16. Battle the computer in OPEN MODE or play a friend in VERSUS MODE. Customize your team in EDIT MODE or even watch a game between two computer opponents in WATCH MODE.

World Class Baseball offers the complete baseball gaming experience. Of course there's also plenty of single-player action. The main feature is PENNANT MODE, where the player chooses a team from one of the world's leagues and strives to win their team's league.

Beat league rivals and save your progress with passwords on your way to becoming league champions. After winning your league, get ready to the face the other league's champion in the heated series for the world championship.

This game began life known as Power League on the Japanese PC Engine and spawned many sequels due to the popularity of Baseball in Japan.

The game offers a comprehensive range of options to fine tune your game. For instance you can switch the players in your roster and play a quick game or play in pennant mode. It’s really as comprehensive as you would hope a game like this to be.

In batting mode the controls feel nice and intuitive. You can position your player before the pitch and use the D-pad to vary the style of swing. With a bit of practice you can minimise the risks of getting caught out or hitting fly balls. The timing of your swing is really the most crucial thing. Sometimes it is easy to make a careless error of judgement when faced with a tricky curve ball.

Fielding works well too. Your control the player who is nearest to the ball, it can sometimes be a pain when the control flips to another player as the ball becomes nearer to them but pretty much every Baseball game I have played shares this characteristic. It all clicks into place after a few minutes play. It’s a simple direction press on the D-pad and the action button to throw to the specific base you want to target to try and get your opponent out.

Visually there are no complaints here. The graphics are functional and do the job nicely. The cheerful and catchy music can get a bit repetitive after a while but that is par for the course for a sports game from this era.

If you want a retro Baseball fix on the Virtual Console then this might be the one for you. It certainly hits Baseball on the NES for a home run into next week!

This game sucks. I'm still waiting for Baseball Stars 2 for the NES. Classic!

Eh. You can't even turn a triple play in this game. There were 5 sequels for this in Japan for the Pc-engine- all better than this one.

Not the best game. I'd rather have Super Baseball Simulator 1.000 on SNES. If you want some good TG sports games, wait for TV Sports Football and World Court Tennis. The tennis game had an RPG element to it, which was flat out awesome.

The japanese Power League sequels are much better- You can't turn a triple play in this game.

Are you supposed to be able to turn frequent triple plays? I LOVE this game probably because it's so simple. It would be nice to see Baseball Stars 2 and Super Baseball Simulator released too.

Have this one for my TurboGrafx. My best friend and I used to rent it on occasion. It got us to saying "The Stars" in the same way that the guys on Saturday Night Live said, "The Bears." If you know the skit, you know what I'm talking about.

I like how the ball zooms in and you can see the stitching and writing on it when you hit a high pop fly or a big home run. Nice graphical touch. Also think it's interesting when you score a run your teammates are hanging out of your dugout waving flags... yeah, that happens in real life... but then, I've never watched baseball in Japan.
