Double Dungeons (TurboGrafx-16)

Double Dungeons

Double Dungeons is a dungeon role-playing game that features smooth-scrolling 3-D game play. Two players can play at the same time, which makes this game truly stand out from the rest. There are 22 unique scenarios, spread out among six levels. The higher the level is, the harder the scenario. Because each scenario is independent, players can choose to start the game from any scenario other than the final one.

Players defeat monsters in each dungeon to gain experience while searching for the "key" that opens the door to the room with the boss. They buy equipment at the shop, team up with characters and defeat the boss to clear a scenario. Players must conquer all 21 scenarios from levels 1 through 5 to obtain passwords. If they obtain all of them, they make their way to the final scenario!

Double Dungeons Review

By Damo

Of all the amazing games to pick on the PC Engine, I have no idea why this has been released. It's a terrible game and was quite rightly frowned upon back when it was first published. It plays much like the Atari ST classic 'Dungeon Master' (but displays none of the innovation and depth of that title, I must add), Double Dungeons sees the player exploring underground caverns from a first-person viewpoint.

The combat system is turn-based and is about as basic as you could possibly get - when you encounter an enemy you tap a button to attack...and that's about it. Not exactly brimming with offensive options, is it? However, by far the worst thing about Double Dungeons is the fact that when you complete one of the levels, you lose all the experience points you gained, meaning that you start the next dungeon as a weakling.

The only thing that makes this game even slightly interesting is the two player option. Adding an additional player usually makes even the most tepid videogame enjoyable but in the case of Double Dungeons getting a friend involved is more likely to result in your chum never speaking to you again.

Only download this if you're after a cure for those sleepless nights - it's possibly the dullest game you will ever play. Avoid!

Very cool Dungeon Master type of game! If you like D&D games, and RPG you will like this game because you use your mind. For people that do not like to think then do not buy this game. Only true RPG gamers will enjoy! The star rating should be more like a 3.

Geez, when are we going to finally see a REAL turn-based RPG on the VC!? Yes, I'm looking at YOU, Square Enix. *malicious glare*

Only for the true RPGers I guess... I enjoy the 3D 1st person dungeon crawls. This one isn't the best, but I'm having fun with it anyway. I'll probably wind up reviewing it to do it justice.

It was a drunken Thursday night, it was Wii night in Thurnscoe (our apartment block), the beer was flowing and the laughs were rioting throughout the night.

Thursday night's Wii night is an ongoing occurrence, as me and the roomies stay up until midnight to see the latest VC (that's what we call it, the VC) games released in the UK.

Armed with 2000 Wii points, we had already purchased a few games earlier that night and were down to about 800.

Double Dungeons was released at midnight. Double Dungeons? Yes, just by the name it sounds so bad. It was a little after 12 and there was me, three of my mates and my fiance, the night was going great, so many laughs and good times, and I thought the funniest thing would be to buy Double Dungeons in an effort to make everyone laugh.

Double Dungeons was purchased and the night died there.

This game is so bad and no one has forgiven me for wasting 600 points on this.

This has got to be the first videogame ever in which I see the word "Zounds!" being used.
Also, cute shopkeeper.

Not for everyone- but my wife and I have enjoyed sitting down and figuring out the dungeons. Going back to level 1 doesn't seem so bad if you just think of each dungeon as a self-contained RPG. You really just have to sit down for anywhere from 45 minutes to a few hours (depending on the size of the dungeon- it's really hard to pick up in the middle of a dungeon) and explore, figure out the layout, where the monsters are, the good level-up spots, etc... like solving a puzzle. Still not for everyone, though.

"zounds!
[place color here] slime has appeared!"

take it from someone who has owned this abomination since 1990... You will read that text 96% of the time. Zounds your face, Double Dungeons!

Good 2 Player RPG, But the fact that you have to start at Level 1 on every dungeon is pretty weak.
