Impossible Mission is highly regarded as one of the classic Commodore 64 titles, particularly impressive given that it was one of the earliest games released for the system. The considerable success of the game led to numerous ports and sequels, including a recent Wii update, but the C64 original is most fondly remembered.
Like many titles from the C64's early period, the presentation leaves something to be desired these days. The graphics are simplistic and more functional than impressive, although the main sprite boasts excellent animation. Similarly, the sound design is rather bare bones, mainly made up of ambient buzzes and beeps, although one could argue that the lack of music reinforces the tension. All that said, the famous digitised speech, like the smooth main sprite, is still quite impressive.
The main strength of Impossible Mission is undoubtedly the gameplay, and that's one area where the game still excels. While it looks like a platform title, this game is arguably more of a puzzler, and a player will often find their brains tested more frequently than their reflexes. The most efficient path through the danger-filled rooms is not always clear, and also not always the safest route, and it is often difficult to judge whether to investigate every item in a room for a password piece, or gamble and look elsewhere. A good memory (or decent mapping skills) is also essential when navigating the labyrinthine corridors of Professor Atombender's base, as it is quite easy to get lost. And then of course there's the all-important secret password, the assembly of which is almost a game in itself.
Adding to the game's complexity and replay potential is an inherent element of chance. The base's layout is randomly generated each time the game starts, as is the position, distribution and behaviour of the killer robots, as well as the locations of the elusive password pieces. While the core gameplay mechanics are quite simple, the forward planning involved in every player action, as well as the random nature of the game's design, makes it a serious, although never unfair, challenge.
Impossible Mission is a platformer, it's a puzzler, it's about eight games in one, all wrapped up in nifty 60's style spy thriller trappings. There's nothing quite like it on the Virtual Console, and while the dated presentation is something of a downside, the gameplay is varied, complex and faultless. This is undoubtedly the first "must-buy" C64 game released so far for the Wii's Virtual Console.

I remember this, too. I also remember never really knowing what to do because like every other game we had, this was a copy without any manual ^^o (I think the only 'original' game ever to hit our floppy was Zak McKracken- great advature, wanna see it again!!).
Still it was great, save the fact that this scream of death (it's in the video) used to wear on my nerves simlpy because I got to hear it way to often...
BTW: what genre would you think this game is? Is it a platformer? Or is the searching/combining of passwords-element enough to call it an adventure ?°_°? ?

I played IP II on C-64 and only had a brief look at this one. Seemed even more difficult than I to me. Animations were pretty smooth for 8bit and yeah it's hard to determine the genre for this one; more of platformer than anything else to me but it definitely has this exploring factor.

Never played this one. Animation is great for an 8bit title. Reminds me of an early version of Flashback.

What happened to the Wii version of this? There were a few box mockups at online retailers (and a UK £14 price tag), then it was rumoured to be a WiiWare title, then... nothing. Anybody know?

Damn repetitive and frustrating, but its a cool concept. I guess it inspired some great titles like PoP and Flashback.

Knuckles-san, don't go expecting it to be identical to Flashback, but you can definitely see the influence Impossible Mission had on the later game.

Was this the first ever game with digitised speech?? I rememeber the first time I played this the speech blew me away. Pretty much in a similar fashion to when the sound blaster card came out and i played my first pc game (prince of persia) without pc speaker.
All in all however, (and when it comes to c64 I probably say this alot) The Last Ninja kicked this game's ass. Mission impossible was certainly one of the better c64 games and in its day was a 4/5, but now I would give it a 3. PS Flashback kills this game, I could just watch the cut scenes on flashback all day (just like soul reaver
)

DarrenSW, the Wii version (And a DS version) was released. However, there was almost no info or anything on it, so it went kind of under the radar...

Basically, you need to search all objects in every room until you've got 36 puzzle pieces. Then flip and turn and change the colours of them so you can create 9 full squares (With some little holes here and there which are meant to be secret code) by overlaying the pictures. If you can't figure it out, call the HQ and ask them to flip the currently two selected pictures on the left to the correct position. You can do that for all pictures, there's no limited amount of calls. Then it's just a case of smart thinking really. After completing all 9 puzzles you need to enter the blue door you saw in one of the rooms earlier.
