ESWAT: City Under Siege (Sega Mega Drive)

ESWAT: City Under Siege

All is not well in Cyber City. Criminals are running amok - looting, pillaging and raping the city of all its worth. Quite a lot of people aren't really too pleased about the rampant activities of these heartless crooks, and this includes Cyber City's mayor, who sets up the ESWAT (Enhanced Special Weapons and Tactics) division of the Cyber Police to deal with the evil, criminal menace.

The player takes on the mantle of a hard-bitten SWAT cop, who seems to be dealing with the criminal epidemic all on his own, with only his trusty service pistol for company. In order to prove to the powers-that-be that he's eligable to join the ESWAT elite, two levels worth of eight-way scrolling platform blasting have to be tackled - each with a very nasty end-of-level crime boss to be exterminated. Then it's on to all the fun and excitement of donning the specialised ESWAT armour and using all manner of extra weaponry to blast these punks into oblivion!

This was one of the first games I ever loaded into my Megadrive and it still sticks in my memory as one of the best action platformers for the machine.

Although it isn't a conversion of the arcade game of the same name (neither was the Master System version, strangely), Megadrive ESWAT still provides a healthy dose of challenge. In fact, I don't recall ever completing it - some of the later levels are incredibly hard, so if you're after a game that will keep you busy then this is worth considering!

ESWAT is a bit of a slow starter - you don't get the all-singing, all-dancing 'Enhanced Special Weapons And Tactics' armour until you're a few levels in - but once it does get going there's plenty of action. The range of weapons available when in ESWAT mode is amazing. Graphically the sprites are nicely drawn (if a little small) and some of the end of level bosses are quite impressive (considering the age of the title). The music is also of a high standard, and let's not forget the sampled speech; it may sound terrible today but back when the game was originally released it simply blew me away!

While it doesn't promise the same frantic carnage of VC stable mates like Gunstar Heroes or Contra III/Probotector, ESWAT is still a very enjoyable title. It's a bit more sedate and laid back and is certainly an improvement over the aforementioned arcade original. Sega fans will want to check this out, as will lovers of platform action titles - everyone else might find it a little dry and unexciting when placed side-by-side with some of the more popular shooters currently available on the VC.

One of my childhood favs, music and voices are pretty much classic and there is a surprising amount of variety in the gameplay.
Only got one complaint - the controls are quite stiff after you transform making it nearly impossible to dodge some attacks.

This can get hard. I'm not sure if it was the controls, the gameplay, or me.

This looks a lot like Robocop vs Terminator and I loved that game! Hope they release it.

I rarely complain about the US not getting games, cause Europe gets the shaft on games we get all the time (have you guys gotten Ninja Gaiden II yet?). But I really am interested in this game, and I can't wait to play it.

Hopefully, the US will get to play this hidden gem sooner rather than later.

I would like to try this game. I never played it when I owned a Genesis. This is why I love the Sega 16-bit era of games. There games where edgy and cleary inspired by action movies like Terminator, Robocop, Rambo, etc.

An underrated gem. This is a really cool run & gun game. Even the music is great. Although the controls do take some getting used to though. Shame about the lack of comments though. :(
