Yoshi's Story (Nintendo 64)

Yoshi's Story

Baby Bowser has snatched the Super Happy Tree and cast a spell on Yoshi’s Island, turning it into a picture book! Only six Yoshis remain, so it falls to them to reclaim the tree and restore happiness to the world.

This cute, colourful platformer uses a unique ‘2.5-D’ graphical style to render impressive character models and bright, vibrant environments in which the Yoshis can run, swim, ‘flutter’ jump and sniff out secrets.

Eat fruit, avoid enemies and obstacles, and throw eggs from the Yoshis’ never-ending supply in your quest to stop Baby Bowser’s plan. And who knows, you might even find the mysterious black and white Yoshis!

Yoshi's Story Screenshot

Remember Super Mario World 2? That awesome platformer that swapped the roles and made Yoshi the main hero with (Baby) Mario being the sidekick? Yeah. This is the first "real" Yoshi game (Mario isn't in the name and he's barely seen in the game) and it does things a bit differently.

The first thing you'll notice is that Nintendo decided to take a very different approach graphics-wise. Instead of opting for a "crayon-drawn" style like Super Mario World 2 they decided to take a weird "pop-up book" style, which looks quite odd (Look at the pictures and video!). Characters are quite big compared to SMW2 as well.

Yoshi's Story Screenshot

The main gameplay is quite similar to SMW2. Yoshi can extend his tongue, throw eggs, do flutter jumps, ground pound and more. This time though, Yoshi's got life - Instead of being able to simply retrieve Baby Mario, he will just take damage, and if he loses all his life, he's a goner. If you lose a life, you've got a bunch of "reserve" Yoshis (All differently coloured) which fancy eating different types of Shy Guys and fruit. Lost Yoshis can be retrieved, but I'll leave it up to you to discover how. If you lose all Yoshis, it's game over.

Beating levels is a bit different - Basically, levels go on endlessly. It's not until you fill all of the dots around the screen with fruit (Just eat them) before you end the stage. There are 6 worlds - In world 1, you will be able to play one of four stages (You can pick). After that, each world only has one stage. If you collect secret big hearts in stages, you will unlock more stages in those worlds. Not each world has a boss - You will most likely hardly fight any before you reach the final boss. None of the bosses are particularly challenging.

Yoshi's Story Screenshot

The music and sound is where this game really fails hard. This is the game that introduced the annoying voice Yoshi has today. Yes - that awful "yaaaaaay" and "whoooooa" originated here. The music has some nice beats to it, but is, overall, nothing special. There are also some songs that actually have Yoshi voices singing - You can imagine how horrible those sound.

Yoshi's Story is, altogether, not that good of a game. If you like Yoshi, go right ahead and get it. If you're a platformer fan, look elsewhere. It might've been somewhat favorably reviewed when it came out, but it's nothing compared to Super Mario World 2. In fact, I would go as far as to say that that is the only good Yoshi game. He never quite recovered after this one.

It will be interesting to see how the gameplay fares without a rumble feature solution for the classic controller. This game relied on it heavily!

OMG! This game was probably my favourite game on the N64, after OOT and MM of course. I was just telling my friends the other day that this needs to be released, and if the rumours right! I will be greatly pleased, this game was a major part of my child hood, and I've been searching forever for an N64 and this game. I would get this the day it comes out.

Whoa, it goes without saying that Yoshi's Island was the better game. But I'm gonna have to say that this one is worth picking up too.

20. Bobidou Canada 02 Apr 2007, 18:23 GMT

this game is pretty bad compared to Super Mario World 2 : Yoshi's Island..

I got this game when it came out thinking it would be better.. if not as good as Yoshi's Island.. but it failed miserably, I was very young when I played it, and I still felt it was conceived for even younger audiances.. the game is just boring, and it's not worth my Canadian dollars, I don't think I'd pay the NES price for this one even.. I wouldn't get it even if it was a free download.

Do yourself a favor and don't download this game when it comes out, you'd be much better waiting for Yoshi's Island, or even buying Yoshi's Island DS

Yeah, but bear in mind that it's Wikipedia - anyone could have added it or taken it down regardless of whether they had concrete information or not. I didn't think much to the original to be honest - it was okay as far as it went but it didn't really strike a chord with me.

I remember playing this game with my brother every morning while eating dry Corn Chex cereal. This game was fun! I hoping Nintendo releases some more N64 games this year, because they only have 4 available. I think the top 5 N64 games that probably will be released this year are Super Smash Bros, Diddy Kong Racing, Yoshi's Story, Mario Party, and Pokemon Snap.

36. a wooden lobster United States 08 Jun 2007, 18:10 GMT

I agree with paragoomba, there'll probably be a rumble addon for the Virtual Console controller. If you flip it over, there's a button between ZR and ZL that opens up the two little slots on the controller's back. Something has to fit in there. Why else would Nintendo make it that way?

37. Bass X0 United Kingdom 25 Jun 2007, 11:28 GMT

Just in case? I can't think of any off hand, but I am sure there have been slots and ports on previous Nintendo consoles that had never been used.

38. Wolfman United States 27 Jun 2007, 22:17 GMT

I'm surprised how many people loved this game. I seem to be the only one that disliked it.

Don't get me wrong, it wasn't awful. However, it was ridiculously easy and short and... happy. I rented it and beat it the second day, without really exerting myself. Keep in mind that I was around 7 at the time, and I still felt like it was aimed at a younger audience. It was almost patronizing. I lost all sense of respect I had gained for Yoshi in the FAR SUPERIOR Yoshi's Island. Yoshi became so depressingly childish and has stayed that way since, even in the Smash Bros. series, much to my dismay.

This is largely a matter of opinion, so feel free to disagree with me, but in my humble opinion, the level design was subpar, the presentation was infantile, the difficulty needed to be ramped up significantly, it lacked the charm and genius of its predecessor, and it left me with an uncontrollable urge to club elephants to death with stop signs.

Perhaps I'll like it better this time around, if I can bear to drop 1000 precious Wii points on a title that so severely underwhelmed me. Yoshi's Island absolutely destroys this game in every way.

39. Wolfman United States 27 Jun 2007, 22:21 GMT

Oops, just saw Whoa and Bobidou's comments. Sorry guys, I promise I wasn't copying you. :)

I also must say that I just remembered that the subliminal "eat right so you can be healthy" undertones bugged me as a child. Go figure. :)

theres no denying that Yoshi's Story was aimed in a different direction.
levels 100% made of paper, or wool, or rubber... the graphic style was crazy! but the sound was awesome there a tracks you've never heard. catchy tunes, sweet yoshi singing, nice guitar playing. it all is very colorful styled, it really fits and gave the Yoshi series a new feeling.

But the game as itself was designed so that had always start from beginning and play through 6 levels to beat the last boss. but you could choose different paths. 4x6 = 24 different levels. but you will find them all within no time. it's really easy coz you must eat 30 kinds of fruit to end a stage and move on to the next. and they're lying, floating or hidden everywhere. you get points for finding more of the same fruit or only the best fruits. this is more of a challenge. in fact, it's very hard to find the 30 honey melons in every stage. but you don't have to do it because you will get nothing but a highscore entry. every level you unlock can be chosen freely and been played in a challenge mode (for fellow highscore hunters).

in the end you have nothing more than 24 big crazy levels with all the mario switches, and egg throws, and secret pipes and sidescrolling platforms and keys and keyholes and shyguys and new guys and whatnot. and that's where you will hunt for the most points: killing enemies, eating fruit, collecting hearts, sniffing for hidden bonuses and stomp them out of the ground.

It's an ok game. It was not worth 100 DM (=50 Euro) at that time, but it's worth 10.

Yoshi's island although easy and short was a blast to play and I shall get it when it's inevitably released. More interested in Yoshi's island though.

The rumble wasnt essential, i played without it, an exclamation mark bubble came above Yoshi while sniffing when he finds something.

I bought this for $20 from a video rental store back in the day (when the game was still going for $50). I really enjoyed playing this. Unfortunately, it was too short. There was a lot to do in the game (sniffing out and finding all the mellons, raising your score, finding the hidden (and ultra powerful) black and white Yoshis, but there wasn't a whole lot of incentive to play it past a few times (well, for me leastways). I'll give it four stars, because it's well-crafted and a lot of fun to play, but it really lacks the replay value for me to download it and play it through again.

i love this game SOOO much (i forget if i already commented)
jump, eat, pound, find secrets, all while trying to collect all 30 melons in a level or just eat lotsa fruits. 6 colors of yoshis to play as AND a black yoshi and white yoshi that can both eat peppers and black shy guys

plus 24 levels to explore and beat with a high score system to challenge your friends

grab the hearts, beat the levels (collect them all lolz) get all the melons, battle the easiest bosses in nintendo history (lick lick mr cotton candy ^.^)

you dont need the rumble pack to play, it doesn't rely "heavily" on it as someone said. the rumble pack is optional. when you are sniffing for underground melons your nose wiggles faster and faster when you get closer and closer to hidden goodness. it just adds extra feeling. we can live without it. it doesnt rely on it in any way.

lastly, when this comes out on vc, buy it. it is a MUST for EVERYONE. you:

shoot - lick - flutter/fly - glide - roll - eat - pound - push - warp - sniff - climb - sink... - and save yoshis world from being trapped in a story book forever

and the ending music is AWESOME

Sweet, you guys used my video! Anyways, obviously I love this game, and still play it to this day. I'm not sure it'll apply to everyone, since the game is easily beat. Of course, there are other challenges, and the Trial Mode is what kept my attention in this game for so long.

If you consider yourself a Yoshi fanboy/fangirl, though, then you need this game. Otherwise, you might want to avoid for its simplicity.

I owned the actual N64 cartridge and I have mixed feelings about playing this game. Yoshi's Story brought classic 2D gameplay with colorful graphics and responsive controls in a 64-bit system. However this game is also a disappointment that failed to live up to Yoshi's Island on the SNES (and the GBA remake). All you do is guide Yoshi and swallow 30 fruits... What was that about? A Nintendo game that is not a worthy sequel to an SNES classic (like F-Zero X). It's good, but not a great game...

It seemed just yesterday that this game was rumored to be on the Virtual Console. Now, it's a reality that Yoshi's Story came out today. To Michael: It is a good game, but the reason it's not great is because Yoshi's Story is too forgiving; anyone can quickly beat the game until boredom (although you do unlock some extra Yoshis).

55. Wolf United States 17 Sep 2007, 18:32 GMT

Considering you can play VC games with a game cube controller, there's not going to be a rumble feature. This game's too fluffy; it woulda been nice to have a 3d yoshi game

56. NikeXTC Italy 17 Sep 2007, 18:34 GMT

This is one of the most hardcore games I have ever played.

Don't look at me that way, I'm being serious! If you look at this game too quickly, you'll find it is a childish game for both its content and its difficulty... That's quite true, finishing the game it's really easy, unlocking all the levels is an easy task...

So, why did I write that sentence in the first line? Trial Mode. You have to collect 30 fruits for clearing a level... If you collect any fruit you come across, a level shall end immediately, but if you try and search for the 30 melons that are hidden in each level, the whole story changes here. Also, you get more points if you kill enemies of your color (and you have to change their colors first) in a row. And so on...

If you're an high score maniac, this game gives you a lot of challenge (getting all melons in the final levels is a really hard task!) and I highly recommend it. Otherwise, stay away from it.

57. ouenben United Kingdom 17 Sep 2007, 18:38 GMT

To me Yoshi's Island is a superb game, not 10/10 but worthy of download for definate :)

It's a fairly short & somewhat easy challenge if you go through the game's 6 worlds only sampling one of the levels.
Great for kids or someone looking for a break from all the serious games like Gears of War, bioshock, etc.

However you can dig deeper into this game and there's more on offer if you put the effort in, such as the ace black and white yoshi's, 4 levels in each world meaning 24 levels, if you chose a different level per world each time the game is different each play-through giving tonnes of variety, also you can try and get 100% melons or favourite fruit in each level which is quite difficult.

I think it's a charming game that's great for gamers of all ages, it may look kiddy (personally I think it looks beautiful) but it's got challenge within it for those who seek it, and offers fun throughout the whole adventure.

The thing I have against it is the length. WAY TOO SHORT. I love to run through and search for the melons so that gives it more substance.

this may not be the best game currently on N64 but there are worse ways you could spend a combination of 1000 points on virtual console.

yoshi's story is aimed at two types of gamers. the inexperienced and the experienced. the inexperienced may be happy just collecting 30 of any fruit. the experienced should aim for 30 watermelons some of which are well hidden. if you think its too easy and short then obviously you're playing it wrong.

I'm quite shocked how many people like this game here, it's horrible. And don't give me that "get all the melons" nonsense. It's a completely pointless quest that offers no reward whatsoever. The best thing the game has got going for it is it's graphical style. The gameplay is WAY too easy, to the point where it's not even entertaining, because there is hardly any challenge. If somebody handed me $10 and told me I'd only get to keep it if I bought Yoshi's Story I'd hand it back, I wouldn't even want to waste the time of purchasing and downloading it.

I'm annoyed!! Why? I grew up with this game- had really fond memories of it... but... I HATE IT! I HAAATTTE IT!!! Yet it brings back so many memories, everything from the awful Yoshi singing voices to the ridiculously easy final boss. I can see why people say this is the worst N64 game on the VC- it is! But I can't say no to it...

I want to know why the heck this game gets compared to yoshi's island so much. This game wasn't even meant to compete with it, and by itself it's a very fun game when not compared to other games.

Dear Nintendo,

Please bring Yoshi's Island SNES to the VC, as it was the greatest platform game ever made for that system. Yes, better than Mario world and way better than DKC. If you do this for me, I will give you a great big manly hug.

Highly underrated - yet undisputedly less good than Yoshi's Island. It's easy to accomplish your goal of finding the Super Happy Tree, but to find all 30 melons on each act is an entirely different proposition. It's worth the effort.

I hate this game. Probably just because of what happened though; I was on the last level with 29 fruits, on my last Yoshi. Let me just say that I died before I got it, and I don't want to go through the trouble again. I mean, it's fun and all, but some of the pages just have insanely tedious levels...

I had this for the N64, beat it a few times, and sold it a few years later. When it came out for the VC, I decided to give it another shot. I'm glad I did because the game is a blast to play, and in my opinion it's better than Yoshi's Island.

Avatar

93. Garlyle Canada 31 Jan 2008, 22:53 GMT

I think this game is really underrated. Though it doesn't have as many levels as other Yoshi-titled games, and perhaps is not as good as Yoshi's Island, it's still about even with YI-DS. With that said, this is a game that casual, 'get to the end' gamers will not appreciate much because it will take about an hour for you to beat the first time. But the moment you start setting limits on yourself, and try digging into it to find every melon in a stage... you are looking at a challenge to rival, or perhaps beat, the stage-combing, hunting difficulty of Yoshi's Island.

Nothing better than a 2-D side-scrolling game with your old pal Yoshi! This game had a good storyline and idea, but I agree that it wasn't the best. I think that if it were more like its SNES predecessor, it could have been better, but the classic melon-eating and cute yoshi sounds were enjoyable while they lasted.

97. jumpman64 United States 26 Feb 2008, 15:37 GMT

I personally didn't enjoy this game. Levels are VERY repetetive and the game is just overall inferior to it's predecessor, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. I personally wasn't a fan of this game's "fruit" system, which was altered from the original game. It also lacks the feel that SMW2 had and plays to much like an action game and not enough like a platformer. Of course, many disagree with me and adore this game, and it's easy to see why; the art style of this title and the all of the Yoshi games remains as one of my favorites, and those Yoshis are all so darn cute. Overall, this is a charming game that really isn't worth $10. I would suggest waiting for Yoshi's Island for the SNES, a true platforming masterpiece. -Scott L. (2 out of 5)

The game was a nice attempt of Nintendo, but was
a) way too short
b) bot the kind of plattformer the people wanted to see and
c) not in 3-D like most of the N64 games.

The overall game is nice and the gameplay is good as well, but overall yoshi's story is a ginourmos let down. 2/5 Stars

a) way too short
b) bot the kind of plattformer the people wanted to see and
c) not in 3-D like most of the N64 games.

a) sixteen levels. you only need to do four levels to see the ending, but thats like saying a Mario Kart game is short since you only have to beat one Cup to see the ending. And each level individually aren't short really. Easy maybe, but it does take a while to get 30 of any fruit on any particular level.

b) okay, so maybe its nowhere near as good as its spiritual predecessor Yoshi's Island but then that was a rare exceptional game. Yoshi's Story is a platform game that stars Yoshi, it didn't set out to beat Yoshi's Island.

c) whether a game is in 2D or 3D, the quality isn't determined by dimension alone. nintendo had already just released super mario 64 at the time, to release another 3D platformer would have been detrimental - they wouldn't have had that long to create Yoshi's Story so they made it different to super mario 64 by making it 2D rather than similar.

Dennis - i suppose it depends on your level of expectations to whether you like the game or not. even back during 1996, it was never the next big thing in 2D platformers. those who hate it are expecting something completely different from it and are disappointed when its not what they wanted. if you like platformers, you can make worse choices than Yoshi's Story on the Virtual Console. Its the cost of two NES games and although the most exceptional NES games are indeed better than Yoshi's Story, yeah - there are worse ways you can spend 1000 points. Maybe wait a while and buy it if you have an itch to download a new game and there no games coming out on VC that you want.

105. Lurch Germany 28 Mar 2008, 16:15 GMT

well, i cannot let this comment remain unanswered from my side.
In the beginning of my post, i stated, that Yoshi's story was a nice "attempt" of Nintendo, meaning that the idea of another Yoshi-platformer was good. so, let's get back to the three points i stated before:
a) way too short. well, apparently you do not agree with me but hey, it's all about personal opinions, ya know? I mean yea, yoshi's story did have 16 levels, hell that's even one more than Mario 64 has, but equals quantity quality? I mean you even admitted it by your self: "Easy maybe", those were the words you have spoken. and yes, those levels arn't short...but you have to take into consideration, that yoshi's story isn't your every day platformer. the goal is not to reach a goal, but to collect 30 fruit on a looping 2-D level. eat the first 30 fruit you see and your done, very quickly, very easy. I mean you can go and try to find all melons on your way to score more, but...16 levels of fruit seeking is a tad to boring for me.
And this leads us to
b) not the kind of platformer people wanted to see.
As i already mentioned, you didn't have to reach the goal of a certain level, but to eat fruit. Most of yoshi's moves from yoshi's island remained, the eating, the groundpounding, the egg-throwing, the fluttering and so on and it would all have been perfectly only if yoshi's story would have been more like it's predecessor, but unfortunately, fans weren't to see such a game again. All it resembles were cute little dinosaurs walking around in a gorgous world eating fruit. (And yea, i did love that game back then as kid, as it is intended to), And those unfortunately lead to only 16 levels. yoshi's island had 6 worlds with 8 levels each + 8 bonus levels making it 56 levels which were all nice and fun. That's what a plattformer is supposed to be IMO.
c) not in 3-D like most of the N64 games. You cannot denie, that people were impressed by new 3-dimensional games like Mario 64, Zelda OoT and so on. I mean, 3D was brand new, it was a hit, gamers were all like "OMG IT'S 3D!!!", and then there comes a game like yoshi's story, literally telling you:" heh, we've got awesome graphics, but gameplay still is the same, buhahahahah, we're just technically improved, but messed up the actual gameplay"

so yea, that's my opinion and yes, i should have stated it more precisely, i apologize for that, have a nice day :D

Nice points Bass XO & Lurch :)

Lurch, you seem to have some tendency rating this game based on how well it did back then. But isn't this irrelevant for present purposes? Sure yoshi's story is not 3-D, as many of the other neat n64 games, but so what? I see no reasons to rate a virtual console game by comparing it to other it's contemporaries. It just doesn't help me deciding whether to buy the game or not.

On the other hand, Lurch, I do understand your points, and they can be understood without the assumption I just "criticized". The question is "Is yoshi's story a good platformer?" and you did give some nice remarks which yields "no" as an answer (boring and stupid fruit collecting etc.).

Btw, I still haven't bought yoshi's story and I'm still pondering whether to do it or not.

It isn't the best game on the N64, but it isn't that bad. still the price of 1000 points is too expensive IMO, but i didn't go all like :"OMGWTFITSUCKSKAITHXBAI"
I believe that this here isn't a plattform for behavior like that and your argumentation, when there is any, is pointless and uninformative.

The graphics of this game are excellent, the sound is good, but each track seems to be a varification of the main theme. replay value is given by the melons i cannot denie that. Yoshi's story is one of those 50/50 factors, you either like or dislike it. I dislike it, because it feels like a giant let down compared to the SNES version. others like it because it looks astonishing in terms of graphics and it features yoshi, plus the gameplay isn't bad at all.

i hate to disagree with you drake, but i can't find yoshi's voice annoying, no matter how hard i try! to be fair, i never played this game... but his appearance in super smash bros. seemed like a natural evolution from his snes days. it looks like they yanked him directly from this game for that, so... i'd say i wouldn't mind playing this at all.

I am telling you now, I have only played the first level of yoshi's story, my brother has played and beaten this game at least two-six times, but I have watched him play it so I'll go by what I know. Yoshi's story is unique due to the fact that it is only about being yoshi and saving the super happy tree from baby bowser so the island won't stay in a pop-up book form. Their were six different colors of yoshi and those were pretty much your lives. If you lost a yoshi, you can get it back by finding a white shyguy in a level. Once you beat the level, and if you still had the shyguy with you, while you have the option to click on the shyguy and he would retrieve only one of the yoshis that you lost back to you. Overall, this is fun for yoshi fans who want to see their favourite dinosaur beat a game without mario or luigi. 4/5

I think the game was intended for beginner young gamers, so it's a good game for youngsters, and the overall cuteness, and graphics style of the game is amusing.
Not as great as Yoshi's Island, but has it's own charm, and it is fun. (Oddly the soundtrack includes a "heavy metal" sounding remix of the current stage's music your on when you become invinsible. And a rap-sounding riff when you're in some underground levels. Kinda odd for such a "cutesy" game.)
Regardless of being a N64 title, for how simplistic it is 10 bucks seems like a steep price to me. I wish they had more different idividual prices for games, rather then pricing them by wich system their for. (On second thought, if they did that, they might charge more for "better" games on older systems.)
