Comix Zone (Sega Mega Drive)

Comix Zone

Sketch Turner is an artist in New York City. One day while Sketch is drawing, there is a huge thunderstorm and a bolt of lightning hits Sketch's image, bringing it to life. That image is Mortus, a megalomaniac mutant who wants to become real and rule the earth.

Mortus magically transports Sketch into the pages of his comic book so that he can end his creator's life and become real. Inside the comic book, Sketch meets General Alissa Cyan, who believes he is a superhero that came to save their post-apocalyptic world from the evil brought by Mortus' hand.

Now that he's a comic book superhero, Sketch can fight like a one-man mercenary platoon!

Released fairly late in the life of the Megadrive/Genesis, Comix Zone didn't exactly set the world alight in terms of sales but is now rightly regarded as one of the better games for Sega's wonder machine. The game features a unique 'comic book' style screen progression, as your character fights his way from one frame of the comic to another. The game is bursting with little details such as ripping off loose chunks of the page of the comic you are in to make deadly paper airplanes. In addition to this there are some problem solving elements to the game which add to the depth of play.

The fighting element of the game is fairly simple, just punches and kicks all served up from one attack button, nothing new here. You can get knifes and explosives to help you along your way along with energy top-ups. You even have a pet rat who helps you out from time to time! The visuals feature that trademark 'grain' effect that seemed to plague the later Megadrive/Genesis releases although it still looks colourful and vibrant even today. The sound is a little below par being hampered by the Megadrive’s limited audio capabilities.

The crippling downside to an otherwise amazing game is the unforgiving difficulty level. Your characters energy meter drains continuously as you do damage to the scenery or a baddie. On top of that you just get one life. If you fall down a bottomless pit that’s it, game over! Some savepoints wouldn’t have hurt, but as the game is quite short perhaps it was thought at the time this would extend the lifespan of the game further.

Comix Zone is more than the sum of its parts. The scrolling 'beat em up' genre is pretty much dead on its feet these days which is a shame when it can offer up gaming experiences as original and interesting as this. This comes highly recommended.

Wow, I can't believe I never noticed this game back when it was released. I had pretty much ditched my Megadrive then anyway. I downloaded this last night and have to admit it's a brilliant game, your review is spot on!

One of the best on the Genesis. This has so much originality it's crazy they never came out with a sequel or a more up to date version. To anyone even remotely thinking about it, do it. It's worth every point.

This is a really amazing game... but it's hard to get over the whole 1-life thing. I don't want to have to cheat to see the rest of the amazing details put into this :D. oh, and it's obviously worth the points

This game has a lot of style, and it's damn hard. It's not fair to say it only requires one button, because it's easy to get your ass whooped. One of my favorite parts of this game are all the secrets laid throughout the levels.

I won't be downloading the game seeing as I own it for Genesis and I played it to death, not to mention I'd prefer my 6-button Genesis controller to the classic controller. I'd recommend it for a game to get though, it's a great one.

I think the game is a bit too short and not user friendly enough to get the full score. Once you know the moves though, it's alot of fun.

I played this game for the first time on "Sonic Mega Collection Plus", and I must tell you... This game sure is something. I didn't even beat the second stage!! ^^; So hard... So great though.

I remember when the genesis was the new system for home consoles and playing this awesome game at my friends house. It is an awesome game with jaw dropping gameplay, and the graphics fit in good with the gameplay. The only downside is that you don't have lives which makes it challenging, but makes you want to play more. This is a must buy for any wii owner.

The 1-life thing isn't entirely true; you get a second and third life after finishing the first and second chapter, respectively.
OK, it's not exactly bountiful, but you take what you get.

my friend had this game on some sega sonic pack thing on ps2. it looked fun enough, but he kept dying. hardish game.

Whatever you think of this games, get Sega Genesis (Mega Drive since most of the people here seem to be from Europe) Collection for PS2 or PSP instead. I don't know about in Europe, but in the US you can get a used PS2 and SGC for less than all the SG games on VC- and then you can also play other PS2 games.

I had the original Comix Zone cartridge for my Sega Nomad (Portable Genesis for all who don't know). It is definately worth your Wii points. Great action, great strategies, great graphics and sound (For Genesis standards), and you can even pick special attacks before you start the game. It's kinda hard, but that doesn't mean it sucks. Trust me on this. I had so much fun with this back in the day and you can too.

Back in the day though, this game performed better on a six-button Genesis controller. (The Nomad had six-buttons, so I know.) That allowed you to use special items without having to stop and toggle them when enemies could be pounding the heck out of you. I don't know if a Gamecube controller or Classic controller works like a six-button controller, but if it does then use that instead of a lone Wiimote.

This game is amazing. It came with a game pack that I had received with my system. fun and challenging!

Quite an interesting take on the beat em up genre, but still.. it's cheesy, repetitive and too short. I probably would've liked it better had it included a 2-player mode.

Some of the best graphics on the Genesis. I wish the difficulty was toned down.

If a word bubble pops up out of your mouth it stays in is place. When you walk afterwards the word bubble does not follow you where ever you were walking. What a bad glitch!

A decent Sega game with great comic book-like graphics, and amusing written dialogue. The fighting system is nicelly done, and has a bit of a simple Smash Bros.-like quality to it.
It's fun, but it's very difficult to progress very far in the game due to the annoying "one life" ellement, (and healing items arn't common enough) and it's often hard to remember what button activates wich pick-up-able item. (Wich includes Sketch Turner's pet rat Roadkill, whom does come in handy for deactivating switches.) So those frustrating ellements are quite unforgiveable for me.
Still, I can't deny the game offers some nice arcade-like fun, and nice concepts. To bad Sega never made a sequal.

Only tried this game recently after Retro Gamer mentioning it so much. It is incredible. Quite hard but the music is brilliant no matter what others say, great use of the Sega's FM chip, music plus sampled audio, large, well animated sprites and decent beat em up action. Didnt sell well on release as was a hard game to market, once you see it running and hear some of the music you'll love it too...but it is hard.

I don't like it. Downloaded it and played for about 10 minutes.
For beat-em-up action I'd recommend Streets of Rage 2 instead.
