If you've been keeping up with the news and saw our recent articles, you would've known that Capcom, Hudson Soft and SNK Playmore all "confirmed" that one of their games would be released on VC today in the US. These games would have been Mega Man, Ys Book I & II, and Samurai Shodown II, all classics and very well liked among retro gamers. Sadly, it appears that Nintendo of America is having none of that (Just like two weeks ago with Star Parodier and Break In) and has chosen to release completely different games instead.
Sonic the Hedgehog on the Sega Master System will probably immediately be written off by many as being an inferior port of the Genesis/Mega Drive version of the game. This is completely wrong. The game has pretty much the same gameplay as its 16-bit counterpart, but features completely different levels, extra Zones, and other noticeable changes. It's not as good as its bigger brother, but it is a good game in its own right and for only 500 points you can't really go wrong here.
Splatterhouse 2 is the sequel to the arcade game Splatterhouse, which was released on Virtual Console over a year ago as the TurboGrafx-16 port. Splatterhouse 2 is not a port, as it is exclusive to the Genesis/Mega Drive. It's not much different from the original game, featuring the same "Run right and clobber everything you come across" gameplay, but obviously having different levels, enemies, bosses and weapons. We don't think it's as good as the original game, although the game itself can't really help this, as it's got more to do with the console it's on.
We'd really like to know what happened at Nintendo of America for a disaster this big to happen - Three fantastic games all announced by their respective publishers (Who presumably got confirmation from Nintendo), only to have two completely different games come out! We can only wonder what happens next week, as Star Parodier and Break In, both already delayed two weeks ago, are rescheduled to be released then!
On WiiWare this week, you can download Wild West Guns, a shooter not unlike the Wii game Link's Crossbow Training, except it is obviously set in the wild west. Check out WiiWare World for more info as usual!

It was to good to be true why bother saying some games to come out when its the complete opposite even if it doesn`t affect me i think its so unfair for you in America i hope you get Megaman, samurai showdown 2 and ys book 1,2 games at least next monday. Nintendo just keeps to dissapoint.

Publishers have no say over when their games are released. They submit games to Nintendo, who then decides when they are released and tells those publishers a few days in advance. So obviously Nintendo told Capcom, Hudson and SNK that their games would be coming today, they wouldn't make that information up!
(This is the situation in the US at least, I think in Europe there's a bit more lee-way)

04 Aug 2008, 13:35 GMT
Does anyone at Nintendo talk to each other? It seems the they have problems in their chain of command.
Thats not a bash against todays games mind you. But I think Nintendo needs to communicate more effectivly with is publishers and consumers on this issue.
I just don't see how 3 publishers all get information that their games will be released today. Somone at Nintendo messed up

04 Aug 2008, 13:36 GMT
Can I just confirm that it was the respective companies that confirmed their games would be released and not Nintendo? They clearly didn't have 100% confirmation, otherwise there would have been a very different selection of games today. Nintendo never stated that these games would be released today.
13. Rockman 90
04 Aug 2008, 13:38 GMT
But Nintendo is the one who decides which games that will be released on the virtual console. maybe they have had a missundarstanding of some sort between the companies. In ethier way i think Nintendo is the one to blame here.

You know, I'm highly annoyed by this (as I'm sure a lot of people are), but I can't help but think... if Nintendo did actually tell Hudson, SNK and Capcom that the games would be out today, and they sent out press releases to that effect, how ticked off must they be right now? They look like idiots for promising something that didn't get delivered, and now will probably have more than a few angry emails to deal with. If NoA did promise those companies that those games would be out today, I wonder how ticked off they must be with NoA right now?

This will obviously be a big letdown after the press releases. To be honest, it seemed to good to be true for the US and it is. @Mazero:
Sure, the games are good games. I'll probably be picking up Wild West Guns. But if you're promised one thing and delivered something else, don't you think you have a right to get a little ticked off? I'll admit, I was psyched up for Ys Book I & II and I'm very disappointed it's not coming this week as promised. So I certainly don't mean to knock these games, but at the same time, I find it hard to be happy with today's releases.

From Nintendo's site:
"Unlike standard Wii games which have release dates that are known well in advance, there is rarely advance notice given of when Virtual Console games will appear. For a variety of business and technical reasons games may be postponed, so we usually don't reveal much past the current Monday's releases."
I guess maybe something happened, but whatever. Sonic is still worth a download, and it's definitely lighter on the wallet than what we were expecting.

This is garbage!!!! I bought the Wii primarily for the classic games, and in my mind there hasn't been a classic released for 3-4 months. I was very much looking forward to Mega Man and SS2. Especially Mega Man, its games like that that are the true classics, not some crappy games from sega that I could care less to play for more than 1/2 hour each. The games I would care to play all the way through never come out. I thought this week would be redemption for the VC, but someone screwed up big time. Huge letdown for me.

Just a reminder to everyone that Nintendo never confirmed anything, this is all the result of third parties thinking they could dictate when the games were gonna be released. The same thing happened with Hudson a couple weeks back, so I don't know why anyone's surprised. Personally, I kept my expectations low and figured if either Mega Man or SamSho II were released I'd be happy, but the releases being what they are is the punchline to the whole thing. Turns out, NoA are comedic geniuses. Drink those tears, Reggie. Drink em up.

Wathever the reason, let's face it. Nintendo disapointed us like never before, not only because of this week change of direction, but for the overall actions they take. Like i said they don't give you what you want, they tell you what you want. They disapointed us and tell us after we're wrong. They understand something that you don't. That's what they saying. I never see so many bad games on a console library. Never. But i'm wrong, i don't understand.

I'm sure they are good. But if I downloaded every game on the VC that was "good," I wouldn't be able to buy much else with my entertainment budget. Before, it looked like an awful lot of people were going to be happy with one, two, or all three of the downloads.
I think the disputes about Nintendo's problems getting a license should be over, then? Not to mention the old argument that it just takes THAT long to polish an emulation. The whiners were right.
These frustrations are all in Nintendo's power to fix.
Well, I thought I was going to try Ys today, but I guess it's back to SoulCalibur 4.

I think Nintendo ought to give some kind of response to this very soon. Not only is this disappointing to their consumers but also the publishers that put their hard work on promoting these games so they can be as successful as Nintendo first-party games. Hmmm. Sonic the Master System Hedgehog and Splatterhouse 2 arent bad games but unfortunately the next week is going to be a mess of everyone on The Internet hating them forever for not being promised today.
I can only wonder why 3 different companies made a mistake. Especially since Hudson used to be right about everything. If anything though, I bet we can expect Samurai Showdown 2, Ys Book 1 and 2, and Mega Man in August at least.
I dont really think Nintendo sits up on the top floor of a looming castle, twirling his Snidley Whiplash moustache and cackling as it releases games we didnt expect. Perhaps if it is they themselves who made the promise but...

And announcing the games that they announced just to release these instead, is just plain evil.

This isn't good at all (not talking about the games here). If Nintendo keeps **'ing up like this the publishers will loose their patience and start saying no to releasing games on the VC. Nintendo needs to change their attitude or the VC will be a very short story.

I agree with Damo on this one.
Here is how Nintendo select VC games each week. A chimpanzee named Coco sits in his cage. A NOA rep shows Coco all of the games that could be released each week. Coco picks up a banana and slings it a his choice of games for the week. The NOA rep. says good choice Coco, here is another banana. And that is exactly how it works:) Coco is the VC selecting game monkey.

My guess as to what happened; Nintendo purposely DIDN'T release any of the "confirmed" titles to discourage 3rd parties from announcing thier VC games early. Personally I have no problem with what happened today, as I'm just happy it isn't a SINGLE Neo Geo release. Plus I had both these games pegged as coming out this month anyway so I'm sure we'll see all those announced titles by the end of August. To be honest I knew three VC games being released in one update was far too good to be true, and I think all of you felt that too.

65. thewiirocks
04 Aug 2008, 15:56 GMT
Rapadash6 has it. The impression I've had with these failed confirmations is that Nintendo is intentionally trying to gum up the works to discourage publishers from giving dates. Thus in effect, the publishers need to STOP GIVING EXACT DATES because they're hurting our chances of getting great games.
Heck, we still haven't seen Parodier thanks to this misbehavior. Like it or not, Nintendo runs the VC service and publishers need to play by Nintendo's rules. If everyone would stop trying to do an end run around Nintendo, life would be better for all of us.
Of course, there is another explanation that is far more sinister. If publishers have pre-announced a game that has everyone excited, then WiiWare customers are engaged into buying mode when Monday comes. Thus Nintendo can make better profits off of VC titles that wouldn't otherwise sell by swapping out the releases. Then when they get around to releasing the title that everyone WANTED, they would still make those profits.
Such business practices are rather shady though, so I would hope that Nintendo is not engaged in such ventures.

@thewiirocks: That's exactly what I've been thinking. How many of us are going to buy Sonic or Splatterhouse today when we normally wouldn't have had we had been anticipating the 3 games promised. I'm sure Sonic and Splatterhouse are fine but neither appeal to me, especially when compared to Mega Man, Samurai Shodown II and Y's. But those of you out there who now have the "itch" to buy some VC titles are more likely to buy the two offerings this week for that very reason when you normally wouldn't have. NoA is creating an impulse buy situation.
Frankly, I'm sick and tired of NoA's crap. Yeah, they've been doing this for a while but we should NOT be getting used to it. Sure, it's just video games and there are more worthwhile endeavors out there but dammit this is a business and their actions are very unprofessional. Nintendo of Japan lay out their VC and WiiWare releases for the month, it is not unreasonable to expect NoA to adhere to the same standards. We should never cease our demands for good customer service from this or any other company that we willing give our money to.
And in case anybody for NoA reads this: Thank you for this week's offering. I will however, pass on these two VC titles and I will wait patiently until titles that I want are released. You will not be getting any "impulse buy" money from me.

Well for once I actually agree that NA gamers are right to feel disappointed this week.
Whilst the 2 VC games are ok, compared to the 3 announced games they are a kick in the knickers. You can console yourselves with WWG which is a fantastic little light gun game, but that wont float everyones boat.
However it's not like Ninty haven't done this before, what with Parodier and Break In.
If I remember correctly the Developer of Pirates said that they had no control over when the game was to be released and had no idea when Ninty would allow the game to come out.
I predict these 2 games and maybe a random C64 game will make up the EU VC release on Thursday/Friday to last us 2 whole weeks.

Nintendo should be careful about building up hopes just to dash them. Nevertheless, I'm already hardened into not expecting anything great for a year or two until the service is about dead. Then, they might release the good stuff en masse in addition to the good stuff that's already on tap.

@68.
Because it's a very good game, way different than the Genesis version. Plus, the Master System version is way better than the Game Gear version thanks to a larger view of the game.
For only $5, it's a serious bargain. I'd rather have it than Megaman 1, honestly.

@ eltomo: While I do think that is a good idea to just get the Mega Man Anniversary Collection just to get Mega Man 1-8 for about the price of a N64 game on the VC (I've got the collection when it first came out), people might not want all eight games, they just might want Mega Man 1&2, also the button combination is reversed (A is to fire, B is to jump) so maybe people want to play the game in its original button combination (A is to jump, B is to fire).

Great. I'm not as surprised as if the games announced would have been released. I think I agree with Rapadash (#58). Nintendo is making sure they control absolutely everything on release schedule... So my eternal-skeptical-but-once-again-proven-right half thinks none of the games announced (MM1, Ys, etc.) are going to get released this month.

Meh. Should have know not to get my hopes too high. Well back to hating VC and expecting nothing out of it for the next few months
@DEMON : Remember you comment about you killing people complaining? How about aiming that at whoever is responsible of VC announcements and releases?

Somewhere somebody made a mistake. And I find it highly suspicious that three different publishers would think their popular games would come out at the same time, so the source is very likely to be at Nintendo. How disappointing. And I was almost certain to buy at least one of the three announced games. But these two just don't compare. I'll pass.

Wow , Nintendo did this on purpose just to piss off alot of people but that's Nintendo for ya. once kirby super star ultra comes out on DS I won't even have to think about kirby dreamland 3 or anything coming to VC. I will get KDL3 whenever it comes out.

If it is Nintendo its more likely to be a "Wait that was the wrong date we gave you. IT WAS THE WRONG ONE." mistake then a "You fools! You told everyone! Prepare to be nuked!" mistake.
Scenerio: Someone at Nintendo sent a message to Sega, Capcom, SNK, and Hudson that all those games would be released on August 4, when they meant to say just August. Or at least just letting Sega know their games were coming August 4 which happened to get sent to everyone else.
Noone really knows what happened but it cant be as bad as some people are making it out to be. All these games will be released this month and we'll forget all about it.

tl;dr
and why the post on the capcom blog about megaman was removed??
Probably because its going to turn into a flame war.
Now we know why NOA don't release monthly schedules of what will come out on the VC...they are so fickle it is pathetic. Lets tell everyone three days before that this will happen and change it on the day...it'll drum up sales for other titles because people will visit the Wii shop thinking stuff they want is there.
103. Lugia2
04 Aug 2008, 17:53 GMT
...Huh. I guess Nintendo of America is clamping down on anyone who gives advance notice.
Granted, this tactic will destroy the VC so that when SS2 and Ys are finally released in 2011 no one will care, but I don't think I can understand them anymore. SNK, Capcom, and Hudson must be really annoyed. All the games were ANNOUNCED by them, not rumored by some freak at NeoGAF; what kind of game is Nintendo playing?
This does not bode well for EarthBound...

Amazing. This article was just started a few hours ago and there's already 100 comments.
Yep, see I knew they were gonna do this. I just knew that this week sounded too good to be true. I just can't believe that Nintendo announce such high-profile titles, and give us games that aren't nearly of the same caliber. TWICE.
Well, I wanted Sonic SMS anyway, but I'm not impressed by SH 2. I think I'd rather get the original on the TG-16.
I guess the games we got instead are at least decent. After all, if Nintendo really wanted to be cruel, they would've given us Digital Champ and Super Pitfall.
At least we got WWG on WiiWare like I expected.
@Demon. Since we didn't get those wonderful titles we were promised, I don't think any killing will be required.
@David777. I think Shigeru Miyamoto said something once about Nintendo "Not giving gamers what they want." Giving the state of VC right now and pretty much the Wii in general, this theory seems to be alive and well.

I knew it had to be true. There were too many optimistic posts on this site in the last few days. Something had to go awry.
As much as I don't want to say it, I can't trust any pre-release news stories from this site anymore since it's all up in the air. I'll believe a release when I see it on Monday.

This doesn't make much sense, why'd they give us the Master System of Sonic before Europe got it? This update looks more like whay I was expecting for the EU update. Maybe Europe will wind up getting SSII and Ys.
Well, I started to worry about how I was going to play so many games now I don't have to. I just hope we do see those games sometime this month, I got really excited about Samurai Shodown II, but now they're crushed. My only question is: why did those companies send out press releases "confirming" their games, yet the update had nothing to do with them? And how did they come to the conclusion that it was their game that was coming out in the first place? There's some serious miscommunication going on here.
Oh well, all I know is my Wii point card is going to be collecting some dust until Ys and SSII actually come out.

Neo Turf is what I'm thinking too. Wii are on the same page with that one

I think there's another twist to this matter that no one here has mentioned.
We all know that company X owns the rights to a certain game (X=any publisher for example Capcom). The easiest way for Nintendo to get hold of old games and publish them on the VC is to make a license agreement with company X.
A license agreement always involves a contract. When two companies makes a contract there's always some negotiation concerning the details in the contract.
I'll bet some money that one clausal in that contract is that the company in question doesn't say anything about a specific release date.
Now this is what happened:
1. Capcom knows that Mega Man is going to be released i August. Either they have a specific date from someone at Nintendo or (more likely) they have talked to someone at NoA that didn't really know but gave them a date anyway.
2. NoA already has a timetable for the VC. The games above were supposed to be released on august the 4th and nothing else.
3. Capcom talks wide and loud about their Mega Man release (which isn't coming but they don't know that, yet).
4. NoA hears what Capcom is saying and takes action.
You see, one of those clausal in the contract said that if the company in question talked wide and loud about a release date they would be sued.
5. Thats what NoA's lawyers did. They called up Capcom and said "WTF are you doing? Take that away or we will sue your * off".
So there you have it. My theory, and a wall of text

Oh dammit, this was NOT a last minute decision it was NOT meant to bring down early releas-forget it. Apparently theres no bright light at the end of the tunnel for everyone else on The Internet. Its always the worst case scenerio this and that. Every video game company is some sort of evil monster trying to make everyone mad. I dont understand what the gaming community is coming to these days. Im sick of trying to calm The Internet down week after week, so I think Ill take this one off.
117. Mr. Cheez
04 Aug 2008, 19:08 GMT
@Atlantis1982. I heard it in an issue of Game Informer, which I just dug out:
"One thing about my game design is that I never try to look for what people want and then try to make that design"
I was apparently quite different from what I remembered. He referred more to his personal style of game design than Nintendo's marketing strategies.
I have an idea. How about the next time when VC-R creates a pre-release article that says were getting 3 high-profile games that week, we use reverse psychology and bitch and complain about it? That way, Ninty will think they are disappointing us again and release those games, which we actually want, though we said we didn't want them. Who's with me?

If only this was the EU update!
These are 2 of just 4 or so games I want on VC that look they'll be coming over the next few months.
Looking back at the news stories the last VC game that actually got me excited by it's release was Kirby 64 on March 7th...

As much as I love Sonic, I got my point card for a specific purchase, and I don't want to waste them, even if it's on a Sonic game. 130. Mr. Cheez
04 Aug 2008, 20:33 GMT
Even if we DID get those games we were expecting today, I wouldn't be able to buy any of them anyway, since I'm down to 300 Wii points and my pre-paid credit card is completely drained. Not counting the 2 games I removed, I have 25 VC games as of now, and yet there's still dozens of games on the service that I still haven't gotten to buy yet. Gradius III, Super Castlevania IV, Starfox 64, Dragon's Curse and Startropics to name a few. Because of this, I'm actually not that mad about the VC release scedule mix-up. <Ducks head>
But I'm still not happy about it either.

Who cares about either of these two games. I've played this Sonic version. I'll pass, the original Sonic the Hedgehog on the Genesis is so much better. Splatterhouse 2 blows compared to the original. But seriously guys, if you don't want anything, please don't "impulse" buy. Why give Nintendo your money when they treat their customers like crap.
Did anyone ever think that maybe that the pre-release anouncements were authorized by Nintendo so people would be duped into buying Wii Point cards?

I know what would be perfect: These companies go to MS or Sony to get their games released on XBLA or PSN

Umm well I was only thinking of getting that Ys I & II since it looked interesting. I got Mega Man Anniversary Collection on the PS2 so Mega Man didn't matter to me and I don't care about Samurai Showdown II. But this does suck but there is a lessen to be learnt don't believe everything you read.
Really does suck though for a lot of people and I still got 1900 Wii Points on my VC. Also still bought no Wii Ware games and am dissapointed at the amount of Wii Ware games that come out weekly.
139. MaxPlastic
04 Aug 2008, 21:07 GMT
sighs I haven't downloaded a VC game in about three months now, which is strange since I used to be the guy DLing at least one VC title a week. I've also completely written off WiiWare. But I have been playing the Hell outta my DS!
140. MaxPlastic
04 Aug 2008, 21:13 GMT
Also I gotta say... Yeah it is Nintendo's fault and even the third parties' fault to some extent, but sites like this one and the gamers I think can be partly to blame. With all the hype and "confirmations," no wonder we're all disappointed. Why would you buy Wii points in anticipation of a game? Wait until you see it on the Shop Channel. Also, don't forget: It's Nintendo's Wii, not the Hudson Wii, SNK Wii, or Capcom Wii. If Nintendo doesn't say anything about a game, don't expect it to happen
141. Virus
04 Aug 2008, 21:14 GMT
I laughed out loud today when I saw the VC releases. I found it so god-awful ironic that I couldn't help it. Not a single "confirmed" release made it! Oh the hilarity!
I must say I'm a little disappointed but I'm not going to blame this on anyone and definitely not on Nintendo. For this week, I'll suck it up because we still got two games that a great deal of people will enjoy. There's not much we can do anyway.
I think the three other games will find their way onto the VC this month eventually. Still, I think people should walk away from this with two lessons learned: the VC is as random as life even with "confirmed" releases and August is going to be one heck of month in terms of surprises.
EDIT: We got our first "M" game too. Cheers for violence on the Wii.

Wow.
Would it kill Nintendo to start giving out release dates for VC games at least 2 days before they come out? I wouldn't be surprised if SNK,Hudson Soft, and Capcom quit developing games for Nintendo after this disaster.
But Sonic MS and Wild West Guns sound pretty good. Although I have the Sonic Mega Collection Plus for the Xbox 360 that includes the Game Gear version of Sonic MS.
I just moved so now I don't have a way to connect the Wii to the Internet, but I should be able to in a few weeks. I just hope they release Ys Book I&II or Super Mario RPG by then.
144. Airola
04 Aug 2008, 21:27 GMT
I'd say most of the Wii owners who buy Virtual Console games every now and then didn't even know to expect Mega Man & co. They just check the new games once a week or once a month or once in two months etc and buy something if they're interested without getting much disappointed if there isn't anything interesting available. It's not like Nintendo is trying to make the fans feel bad. And remember, it's only a game. If your expectations grow so high with these games that when you don't get what you were waiting for you are extremely disappointed and cursing companies to hell, I just wonder how you manage to deal with life. It must be a hell of a stress.

Well, all in all it's still a great VC day. Sonic on the Master System is fun and different enough from the Genesis version to warrant 5 bucks, and Wild West Guns is easily the best Wii Ware game available right now. As far as my VC wishlist goes though, how about some Super Punchout? That would make up for a year of weak games!
