Some people seemed to think that Nintendo would release a big-name title this week on the Virtual Console because of E3 (We ask: Why?). While you are getting a "big-name" title, it's probably not one of the ones you were hoping for.
Donkey Kong 3 is the final entry in the Donkey Kong arcade series, and if you ask us, also the weakest. The game no longer features Mario at all, instead you play as the new character Stanley the Bugman, who never made an appearance in another game since. Your objective is to get Donkey Kong out of the greenhouse he's invaded by spraying him from below with bug spray, while avoiding various bugs that try to steal your flowers.
Ninja Commando for the Neo Geo is a fun overhead action/shooter hybrid, similar to games like Ikari Warriors and Mercs. You can play as one of three ninjas who each has different attacks as you attempt to make it through the many stages. The game is an early Neo Geo game so the graphics are not spectacular, but they're still quite good. A lot of you will probably dismiss it for being the nth Neo Geo game in a short while, but it's actually pretty good.
That's all for VC this week! On WiiWare, there's just one new game: Major League Eating: The Game. Check out WiiWare World for more info, as usual.

Not bad. Not sure if I will get them but I like that they released all of the DK trilogy. That gets my hopes up for other series with games that havn't been released yet. (Mario, Sonic, MegaMan)

Wait, I just noticed "Stanley the Bugman, who never made an appearance in another game since" in the article. I'm guessing you meant as a playable character, right? He has made at least three other appearances: The G&W version, which is quite different, and in Super Smash Bros. Melee as a trophy. His game appears as a mini-game in Wario Ware Touched as well. I think there was one more...

Niether of these games appeal to me but I am still happy to see more than a single game released. Also it's nice to see a non Neo Geo game there as well. I'm curious, though, about the TG16 games that were suppose to come out this month. Three games but only two Mondays left... I guess they plan to release two in one single update. Maybe this is a sign of better things to come. At least I hope it is anyway.
28. Jogurt the Yogurt
14 Jul 2008, 15:38 GMT
Slangman is right. It's a DK game, but it's not good. Also, Mike, it's not really a classic, either. It's a pretty bad tack-on to the series that most people don't know about. Still, it's one of those NES-Arcade style games that some people really enjoy.
I'm not complaining - I actually like weeks like this - I'm just waiting for the hilarious SMRPG Mega Man etc. comments. Oh ho ho ho ho!

@ Mike: At least we got a Nintendo game, although it's not that good, but it is a classic....
Well, unfortunately Mike, statements, simlar to the one above, are the ones that tend to piss off our european counterparts. They tend to think that North Americans will buy any game that they tend to be familiar with, and often ignore the hidden gems.
Unfortunately, this IS true to an extent
Now, although Europeans have tended not to neglect games/ gaming systems in the past, the European gaming market is rapidly changing from what the used to be (see WiiWareWorld article on topselling WiiWare games)
So, you can't really sterotype the North Americans for buying only the familiar titles, because Europeans are kinda doing the same thing, however, the North Americans in turn mustn't be pissed for a getting a non-Nintendo title, and being slightly happy when they do get one, even when it is most certainly absolute crap.
Lets hope this post isn't a repeat of Friday's VC release

Well, even though neither of these games really interest me, I like the fact that we finally got a nintendo game.( Even if we still got a neo geo game with it, which isn't a bad one.) Honestly, I think they are giving us good games so they could get us to support them during the console war @ E3 today.
Also, does any1 know where the E3 convention is being held and at what time the convention is starting?

@ Tides of Chaos: You are correct . If they get the lesser games that we don't want out of the way, they would have to give us better games or games that people are demanding be released on the virtual console, like the games people are demanding be released from the Nintendo Power: Most Demanded section.(See the King of Monsters post, # 56 ,that I made to see the games that people are demanding be released.)
Also, as a fun fact, did you know that Stanley is actually Mario's cousin? Pretty cool information, right?

I can't speak for Ninja Commando, but Donkey Kong 3 is a big "so what." Honestly, I thought Nintendo had released all of their early run NES titles. How many more of these do we have to deal with? I want quality NES games. Where's Blaster Master?

Do you also know where it is being held?
@Terranigma: I know, it is a preety cool fact to know. Sadly, not a lot of people know Stanley because he was released in one game. Poor Stanley.

Wow. This actually isn't too bad of a week. Caught me by surprise.
I knew DK3 was just a matter of time, and Ninja Commando looked cool when I saw it in the European releases scedule. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come. Now maybe this week we'll have less conflict than we usually have.
And hey, at least the NEOGEO game we got isn't a fighter!
For some reason, my Wii Shop hasn't updated yet. WTH?
@Alfred. I hope we don't see a repeat of Friday either. Luckily Supermario, Rexy, and Demon 212 haven't found this page yet, so so far it seems like we're in the clear!

Stanley got drunk while on vacation in Hong Kong back in '86. Stumbled into a poorly lit, grungy Kowloon brothel and made a terrible choice. Research into HIV was still in its infancy at that time and although money was no issue (cousin Mario's pockets are deep) Stanley wasn't able to get the medication he needed to fight the infection.

I think E3 is "press" only this year but its in L.A.
I don't think Ninty has much going on there so I'm not holding my breath on that. Yay wii got 2 vc games this week!!!
I agree with post #40 not a bad idea... Ninty should have done that a long time ago...
And how does getting the lessor quality games out of the way create consumer satisfaction??? I have not been satisfied with my wii for a while now...
If E3 does not blow me away with some huge surprise and show they actually listen to consumers instead of generating profits then it will be a DS and an Xbox1 for me. ( I never played Xbox or 360). I can use the DS for "party games" (wi-fi) and use my Xbox1 and splincell (vc?) for a more hardcore experience. Nobody even plays the wii in my house anymore... I hope it improves soon.

@Andrew and firebrand: Thanks for the information on where the convention is being held. Too bad it is all the way in Los Angeles, I don't think I can make the trip to there from New York, oh well. Also, the reason the amount of people attending the convention dropped is because E3 and E for All split up and made two seperate conventions of their own. I guess that is why the size dropped greatly.

Similarly, I wasn't expecting much due to E3 - more peoples' anticipation is on Nintendo's conference tomorrow morning than other current affairs. You got the wish of another Nintendo game at least, but I wasn't expecting Donkey Kong 3 up there.

Okay dude, let me clarify my comment. I meant that the Donkey Kong series is a classic, but this game is pretty average. Heh, every game series has a dark sheep, and Donkey Kong 3 is the dark sheep for the classic NES Donkey Kong games. Oh yeah, I would consider buying Ninja Commando before Donkey Kong 3, but neither really interests me.
I'm just more upbeat this week because at least we got 2 games. Those 1 game VC weeks blew chunks!
By the way, nice to see you Rexy!

Wow Microsoft just confirmed "Avatars" now, I found out about all of Microsoft's E3 secrets about a month ago thanks to some database hackers and coverage by GamesRadar, Have they confirmed the "Newton" controller (wiimote clone) yet?

@PHANTOM93: No, i didn't see any mention of it at the conference. I've seen pics, though. Man, that thing looks just like a lightsaber.
That link that Terranigma posted regarding a new Wii accessory isn't just a rumor. It has been confirmed by Nintendo. Its called MotionPlus, and it is supposed to allow more accurate motion response than the standard Wiimote.

@Andrew. So FFXIII ISN'T ps3- exclusive now? Yes! now I have even LESS incentive to buy one! Go 360!

Cheez, you need to invest in a classic controller for anything other than NES/TG16 I think. For Megadrive and Neo Geo it ain't so hot. I am digging Ninja Commando. I missed this one at the time. Its bad ass!
80. Andrew
14 Jul 2008, 22:50 GMT
@Mr. Cheez: Yep, FFXIII will be on 360 also. The PS3's list of AAA exclusives is growing thin.
The Square Enix announcement was the only event that saved Microsoft's conference from being completely lackluster, imo.
81. Mr. Cheez
14 Jul 2008, 23:06 GMT
@Dazza. Actually, I've played my Genesis games just fine with a single wii remote. (though the awkwardly-placed A button gets on my nerves sometimes, especially when playing something like Gunstar Heroes
). Though I agree, the bottons on the Classic controller are much more snappy, responsive, and better-arranged. I was just to lazy to plug it in!
And yes NC is quite the badassery.

I figure they were swapping. Ouendan 1 in 05, EBA in 06, Ouendan 2 in 07. I myself thought thered be an EBA 2 announcement this year, but a recent interview with the guy said hed love to do another one and that he wasnt currently working on one. Hopefully it was just a cover up though as to not reveal secret plans. Unless Nintendo decided to make a sequel without iNiS involvement, which I super doubt.
I can't believe also that the Major League Eating Competition game came out today.
Well what did you expect? It had to come sooner or later.

@Jogurt the Yogurt
The Donkey Kong series however is a classic, even though Donkey Kong 3 is not. Maybe some people actually like the game.
And besides, you said Dig Dug was a classic a couple of weeks back and I think that there isn't anything special about that game. It's good, but certainly isn't a classic.

@Virus
And here is pure stupidity by Nintendo. They had a chance to get Goldeneye, plus other Rare classics but they said no because they didn't want the 360 to have them. So now Microsoft remakes Banjo-Kazooie slightly and bam they get the game for Xbox Live and Nintendo doesn't get squat for the VC. Way to take care of your customers Nintendo!

Ha! I just read that game called Sadness isn't coming until Aug. of 2009... I thought this game was going to be one of the first games released for Wii... 2yrs ago! oof! looks like Ninty did it again... another gimmick at E3, maybe they should have just made the wiimote that way in the first place instead of making it an "add-on" 2 yrs later. My Wii is starting to look like my Karaoke machine in that it only gets used when I have friends over and even then my K-machine gets more use. After two yrs and about 1000$ I am not impressed, in fact I have been a fanboy for more than 15 years so I have been patient for sure but now the time has come for Wii to go... maybe I'll kick myself later (but I highly doubt it.) Never played XBOX1w/splincell mod (vc?) and graphics are far better also AAA titles can be found for less than 15$. (im trading for DS and Xbox1 and still gonna have 100$ for games) Good luck waiting for all the games. I'm done trying to pay NINTY for what I already can get for free. (elink)
Guess im the loser but it takes one to know one 'cough' NINTY 'cough'
Peace out Y'all and don't believe the hype!

After Microsoft's big E3 announcement (FFXIII), I already plan on buying a 360 sometime this year.
But hopefully Nintendo doesn't disappoint.
So far I've heard we'll be seeing Wii-motion, and they'll unveil Wii Music.
Wii-motion seems pretty interesting, but I don't know if I care too much for Wii Music. So hopefully that's not the "hardcore game" Nintendo was talking about.

Wii Music and the DS version of Mystery Case Files: MillionHeir will be at E3. Expect Kirby, Animal Crossing and Wario Land as well. Also, i hear Pilotwings might re-emerge as well as F-Zero, Star Fox, Punch Out!! and Kid Icarus.

106. Jogurt the Yogurt
15 Jul 2008, 15:42 GMT
@Mike - As I said, just because something is old doesn't mean it's a classic. I'll now add that just because some people like it and some people don't doesn't mean something is a classic. Classic games are generally successful games that have had an impact on the industry/history of gaming. Barely anyone even knew about DK3 back in its day. Sure, it was a sequel to a classic game (DK), but that doesn't make it classic. Super Mario Sunshine is not classic, for example. Dig Dug is a classic because it was yet another pioneer of inventive arcade gameplay (kind of like how Qbert is a classic even though you don't see it around much these days).
107. Terranigma
15 Jul 2008, 15:47 GMT
Super Mario Sunshine is a shell to what it could have been.
108. Andrew
15 Jul 2008, 16:14 GMT
@Terranigma: I completely agree. My problem with Super Mario Sunshine is that there isn't enough variety in the different worlds. They all have the same "tropical" theme, whereas Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy have SO many different themes.
Also, The FLUDD is very lame.

Great you think Dig Dug is a classic, I don't! If you cared to read any of my earlier posts, I said that I think Donkey Kong 3 is not a classic game. I was basically saying that the Donkey Kong series as a whole is a classic. I would consider games like Castlevania or Mega Man 2 to be classic games before I would consider Dig Dug one.

To bad they didn't confirm a storage solution...
What do you think about BK XBLA Remake? Is it the End for BK on VC or the renaissance, since the main issue for games not coming to VC was that remakes would be allowed to go to XBLA or new games won't be made for Wii?

No storage solution.
No new "hardcore" game like they promised.
Instead, we got 1:1 motion that developers won't use until 2010.

I wouldn't call Animal Crossing a "high point" - that expects you to literally play the game ALL THE FREAKIN' TIME and it penalises you for every day you completely skip it. I don't have the time to constantly check up on a virtual town or something.
But yeah, that IS a disappointment. I suppose we have to rely on whatever strong releases the third parties could come up with to keep the system going strong.

I still wouldn't call GTA "hardcore" by any means. Sure, it has an 18 rating, but the subject matter of screwing up the law makes it the most childish game in existance.
True hardcore is something that tests the reflexes of the gamer in question, rather than its outer shell. Thus, concerning us Nintendo gamers, who needs GTA to make themselves "look cool" when we have at least Fire Emblem to "feel cool", among others that have escaped from my head?

You know a conference is lame when Nintendo's lone "hardcore" game was Animal Crossing...
137. Rexy
15 Jul 2008, 23:33 GMT
Animal Crossing, as I mentioned above, isn't even much of a game to begin with - sure, anyone can pick up and play it, but it becomes even more tedious once it gets to the point that you have to play it every single day just to save your town from looking like a mess. Trust me; I attempted to go through it, only to get stumped after a few months due to this >.>
I at least appreciate the premise of it, but given that I'm one of those that prefer to play games at my own pace, I'd rather look into Harvest Moon if I want a life-type game of some description.

Although I did enjoy the original Animal Crossing when it came out, Rexy is absolutely right. The game makes you feel guilty for missing a day, and if you don't play it for a week, you end up spending the next day or two picking up weeds.
As bad as the Wii lineup was, the DS offerings were just as lacking.

Nintendo might showing a lack of effort intentionally. They may have a press conference during the fall like they did last year..
Other Game Companies might be looking The TGS to show their full hand. The TGS takes place in October. The TGS is becoming a more important event then E3 is right now.
E3 doesn't have as much luster as it did a couple years ago. E3 is on the decline and is starting to turn into a joke. I expect even less companies being at e3 next year.
Some top videogame publishers or developers didn't show up at e3 this year like Activision. There was less publishers or developers at E3 this then there was last year. That is telling me E3 is not as important in the Video game industry as it was a couple years ago.

I'm starting to get kind of pissed at how much people love to complain, no ones ever satisfied, at one time people were b*tching about how Wii never had voice chat (I was among this group) and now that it's there, people are disappointed about E3 and aren't just grateful. Jesus, I'm starting to think it's not totally Nintendo's fault.
151. x.SuperMario.x
16 Jul 2008, 03:35 GMT
@ Dokenzz- Are you leading damage control?
Nintendo promised at least one hardcore title at E3.
Could you please name that hardcore title?
Because I didn't see it.
EVERYONE thought Nintendo had a disappointing E3, so don't cry about how people are upset.
Nintendo gave people a promise, and they didn't deliver.
As for the mic, Nintendo hasn't even said if it'll be compatible with games already released, so keep your pants on.
But you can keep pretending Nintendo loves you.
Wanna know whats funny though?
When something disappoints everybody, two kinds of people emerge.
There's the people that openly share their disappointment with others.
Then there's the people who try to be the "bigger person", and they tell everyone to shut up, when they're really crying on the inside.
Anyone who tries to defend Nintendo's E3 conference is part of that second group.
You can pretend it didn't hurt you, but I know you feel like you've been kicked in the nuts.

@x.SuperMario.x
Satoru Iwata was at the TGS in 2005. He revealed the Nintendo Wii's Controller there during his keynote speech.
Nintendo does have different press events though outside of E3. Last year was a prime example. They used that press conference to announce Wiiware games during the fall of 2007. I know Nintendo used to have Space world as an event.
I got the mixed up by Nintendo's Wiiware game announcements last fall. The TGS happened a couple weeks prior to that.
When you hit my age, you will start to mix up facts a little bit over time or need help to remember things. I am not using this excuse as damage control. It is a fact.
I am older then most members responding vc news stories. I remembered the Snes launch release in 1991 as a teen.
