Mega blasting action

Mega blasting action

If you like blasting things then you are in for a treat this week as this Monday’s Virtual Console selection will give you hours of blasting pleasure.

First up is Mega Turrican on the Sega Genesis. You might remember this as Turrican 3 on the Commodore Amiga. It's kind of a mix between Metroid, Contra and Gunstar Heroes but that doesn’t really do the game justice. We think it is well worth a look for run n’ gun fans, even though Super Turrican on the SNES is already on the VC and in our opinion has the edge on this.

A second Master System game appears this week to join Wonder Boy. Fantasy Zone is well worth a look. It is sort of like a cute version of Defender. It is one of the more memorable games from the early Master System library, your 500 Wii Points would be well spent here.

Get blasting!

Note: These games will not be available in the North American Wii Shop Channel until 9 a.m. Pacific time on Mon 14th April.

Posted in US releases, Master System, Mega Drive.

Turrican is good fun, I enjoyed Super Turrican on the SNES, I guess the Genesis version is just as fun though, is there any big difference from the SNES or Genesis version?

5. lordbowser United States 12 Apr 2008, 12:12 GMT

I figured we'd be getting Mega Turrican this week. Fantasy Zone was okay but I'm gonna pass on that one for now.

I'm glad we didn't get shafted as much as North America did. Phew...and Mario Kart Wii rocks. Can't wait for Wii Fit. You may have Brawl, but we've got one awesome one you're still waiting on. :P

Only 2 games? Come on Nintendo, you can do better than this!

8. Tony United States 12 Apr 2008, 13:37 GMT

Hmmm I thought Mercs would be out by now. Anyway I think I will download Fantasy Zone based off peoples comments and reviews.

When NA does get Mario Kart Wii though, Euro will still not have Brawl... ;)

Anyway, I can't believe how disappointing the VC has been this year so far. I mean it's good for my wallet, but I'd rather see at least some games that I'm waiting for.

I thought Ninty's plan was to release decent VC games when Wii releases dry up? So why did EU get 4 games on Friday when MKWii came out? Don't you think it would of made sense for EU and NA to get SNES Mario Kart in case people couldn't afford MKWii?
And yeah MKWii is great but really it's not that groundbreaking, Most of the new tracks are meh...

11. Tim Canada 12 Apr 2008, 14:17 GMT

@DOOM, Nintendo doesn't have a plan for how to release VC titles. If they did there would be a method to their madness that we would be able to decipher.

True, I cant wait for Brawl, I know its going to be incredible. But right now racing online mario kart with friends is too much fun :) Considering we were still playing double dash here up till yesterday, I expect the life span of mario kart wii to be quite some time indeed. WEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Duuuuude, what the frig is up with all the shooters? Nintendo do you not realize that in a few weeks we are all going to be consumed with GTA IV and Mario Kart Wii? I guess my Wii points will go unused for another week. If ur gonna put out 8-bit games on the Master System, you could at least give us 3 or 4 to choose from each week and throw some variety in there. We have enough shooters already!

14. Stuffgamer1 United States 12 Apr 2008, 15:24 GMT

I think I still have the unlicensed Tengen NES release of Fantasy Zone, but the Master System version looks a little better. Might download it soon.

I'm surprised that Europe already has Mario Kart Wii (seems abnormal for Nintendo), but I'm happy for them. We get so many awesome games before they do, and some of the great stuff we have never released there at all! Mario Kart's only two weeks away for U.S. anyway, and I can pass my time with Brawl, Double Dash, Mario Power Tennis, and Kirby's Air Ride (I'm obviously not too picky with multiplayer Nintendo games, at least in reference to their age.) And, of course, there's plenty of great single-player games out there (especially if you have more than one system like I do. Xbox 360 and PS2 can eat up a lot of time).

Also, I've been wondering something. Will, is your avatar from anything in particular, because it looks familiar. Just curious!

there's only a finite amount of shooters they can put on the virtual console. they should be drying up soon with the TG16 at least.

Avatar

17. Kelvin United Kingdom 12 Apr 2008, 16:17 GMT

Jolted85, Mega Turrican places less emphasis on exploration than the first two C64/Amiga games, but it's less linear than the SNES titles. So consider it a transition between the two "eras" of Turrican.

I'm pleased that the US is getting Master System games too. It'll show them what they missed when the NES ruled the roost over there! ;)

So Europe is stepping it up (however because of C64). When the WiiWare games comes here, the # of VC games won't matter to me that much anymore. I will be more interested in WiiWare when the time comes! (May 12, 2008).

Yeah considering how it was only reported that Sega said in a press release that Master System would cost 400 points and we never saw the actual press release, Im guessing

A. The Press Release never existed
B. It existed but there was a typo
C. It existed but the plan didnt go through
D. Or maybe it did?? The Future knows...

Go get Fantasy Zone! It´s not just "another shooter", it has a unique atmosphere. The game is pure LSD and not like cutsey-shooters a lá Parodius.

Mega Turrican is a game I have yet to play, but I´m sure I´ll get it one day since I love both Amiga and SNES Turrican.

Too bad for stateside VC this week... I'm still pissed we don't have Vectorman yet. I'm just glad there's a lot of good Wii games I have to play at the moment like Brawl, Z-Dub, Tomb Raider Anniversary, and Okami comes out in a few days.. and next week I'm buying a PS3 w/a copy of Ninja Gaiden Sigma and then I'll probably get GTAIV when it comes out.... so I have plenty to hold me over before Mario Kart... in fact, I'm not actually all that thrilled about it... I doubt I'm gonna get it on release day.

I wonder if there are plans to release more games in territories for which their was originally no release? Like the Hanabi festival. Rendering Ranger would make a nice VC release.

Not a bad week for that States two games that don't suck and you're probably all playing brawl anyway :-) I've been pleasantly surprised by the VC the last couple of weeks especially Europe getting the master system as well. If I can't find a copy of mario kart today I'm gonna download Fantasy Zone

I've played both Brawl and MKWii and I honestly have to say I like MKWii more. Admittedly Brawl stopped working with the Freeloader after about 3 startups, so now I have to wait for the PAL version to come out and then get Nintendo to repair my lens (Instead of letting them do it now, because then it'll cost me), but still.

It looks a bit like an album cover by Sabac Red from the hip-hop group Non-Phixion. Maybe that's where you saw it stuffgamer1

51. Rapadash6 United States 14 Apr 2008, 15:20 GMT

I might actually try Fantasy Zone. I've always heard such good things about this series and being the big TwinBee fan I am, it looks to be in the same league. Still, a less than spectactular week for North America, as usual.

Avatar

52. Stuffgamer1 United States 14 Apr 2008, 18:27 GMT

@Will- I HAD thought it looked like Lin-Ku from Press Start (awesome movie, by the way. If you've never heard of it, check out pressstartmovie.com), but looking again I realized that the mouth cover was different. I guess it was just the eyes that looked similar (the expression on your face fits Lin-Ku perfectly).
@Charco- I've never even heard of Non-Phixion, so that definitely couldn't have been it. I don't listen to that kind of stuff (prefer to stick to video game soundtracks and Weird Al).
Anyway, this was all terribly off-topic. Sorry about that. You may all resume your normal opinion wars (just a joke, but you know it's true!).

53. will United States 14 Apr 2008, 19:03 GMT

Ugh!!

I don't need these horrible games for VC. I want to support NINTENDO but the only good games that are coming out have been made like four times or more ( i.e. Metroid, Mario, Zelda ). We get it nintendo you can make a great mario games now can you share some of that goodness with other companies so we can get some rpgs that are not for the 10 and younger crowd... (pokemon). I can already see it now... Nintendo cancels VC release due to lack of sales!!! At least there will always be emulation!!! I am more than happy to pay for the same game I already bought when I was nine for 30 bucks., ya i'll buy it again but don't expect me to pee my pants for games that were at the bottom of the list then. guess what... they are still horrible games! If you want me to buy horrible games then release Maniac Mansion with wiimote compatability or something. We have to boycott these horrible games being re-released and quit convincing ourselves that these games are actually worth buying. Who's With Mii?

Avatar

54. Bass X0 United Kingdom 14 Apr 2008, 20:48 GMT

Okay. I'll boycott it until there is something i am willing to pay for appearing on it.

55. brooks83 United States 14 Apr 2008, 20:52 GMT

Will - Neither one of these games are horrible, if you would try them you would understand. Personally, I want EVERY game to be on the VC, even one's I don't like. I'm not happy with the way Nintendo is handling the VC at the moment, but boycotting it is stupid and Nintendo is gonna make a huge profit on the VC no matter what they release, so it's not going away anytime soon. Just remember, 2 years ago there was no Virtual Console.

HAHA, being the cynic I am, I found this funny & disturbingly plausible. However, I find it just as likely that NOA knows that they're holding out on the goods... Perhaps they're more inclinded to release solid titles during formal Wii Game "dry spells."

Avatar

57. Tony United States 15 Apr 2008, 14:34 GMT

I agree with v404. Lets see what games come out during June and July since Mario Kart and Wii Fit will already be released. I don't think they will cancel the service though.

Nintendo used to include all of these classic games a unlockables. 20 NES games were hidden in Animal Crossing; Windwaker came with a bonus disc of classic Zelda games and Metriod was included in some the newer Metriod titles.

I am still dissapointed that Master System will not be 400 points. I think since Sega announced them as 400 points, Nintendo should honor that price point.
