Bonk's Adventure (TurboGrafx-16)

Bonk's Adventure

Set in prehistoric times, this Wonderboy-style scrolling platform game has the hero, a slap-head baldy called PC Kid, running and jumping his way through many levels, head butting an unbelievably weird load of beasts who run, hop and fly around him.

Each collision with a beastie diminishes energy, but there are loads of fruits to collect to top your total, and there are also kebabs! Eat one of those and you can kill an enemy with one head butt. Eat a second and become invincible for a short period of time!

There are a variety of levels, starting off in the Prehistoric countryside. Get to the end of the that and it's across a volcanic landscape, followed by a hazardous clamber over the back of a massive dinosaur - get to his head and he opens his mouth, allowing PC Kid to continue his mission through the monster's stomach! Weird, eh? And that's only the beginning…

Bonk's Adventure Review

By Damo

Nintendo have Mario, Sega have Sonic, NEC have...Bonk! Bonk’s Adventure along with its two sequels are really the defining games for the Turbografx console.

This platform game is set in a prehistoric world. Our protagonist Bonk doesn’t jump on bad guys to attack them however, his style is to bash them with his oversized noggin! You can headbutt whatever is coming directly in front of you, or do a diving headbutt mid-jump - a devastating attack!

If you tap the attack button whilst jumping Bonk can even hover slightly mid-attack. This helps our stone age friend to cover more ground in a single jump. Bonk's manoeuvrability does not end there, he can even scale his way up the sides of walls using his teeth!

The stunning colour palette of the Turbografx is shown off to nice effect here, all the sprites and backgrounds look lush and vibrant.

The levels are mild obstacle courses, including pits that you have to leap over, ground that falls from under your feet, and volcanoes that shoot fire at you. You power up as you collect hunks of meat, making your attacks more powerful and granting immunity for a short time. Probably the most notable element of the game is the style and creativity. For example, the second level has you making your way through the stomach of a dinosaur.

The gameplay is addictive and Bonk's Adventure presents a harder challenge than most platformers of its type, as well. This is a good prehistoric romp if ever there was one, if you can't wait for the sequel to be released on the VC then download this now!

I wasn't too thrilled with this game. The name always popped up every now and again, but it wasn't until the VC that I got to play it, and all I can say to it is a big "Meh!". Yes, the game is imaginative in parts, but it is overshadowed by clunky controls, some lackluster environments, and that befuddling, strange orange tint.

Even if the sequel is supposed to be better, Bonk's Adventure has put me off from even trying it, in fear I may get another much less than stellar platformer. I've played much better games than this. I recommend anyone to think twice before putting your Wii points down for this one.

Excellent game. It is an amazing platform game and can be pretty tough at points! I highly recommend this game to anyone who is a fan of the platform genre.

Good platform game, nothing more nothing less. 'Stick to Mario' may be cliched advice, but is certainly true with this game.

I like this platformer a lot. It has a nice idea, and it rolls with it well. The bosses are particularly entertaining. No doubt a nice break from Mario and Sonic if you have worn them out.

I should have given this 3 stars, because it's an average platformer at the heart of it all. I couldn't. I have to give it a 4, because it just oozes style and personality. That's something that translates into extra mileage when you hit those portions of the game that feel 'been there, done that'. That's what makes it feel fresh, when it's core is derivative. The series definately gets much much better, but here's to the begining of a beautiful friendship. Bonk is the (proto) man!

Good Turbografix game. Although the 2nd one is the best in the series.

I like Bonk 3 the best, sure it is a little slow at the start, but it picks up and also has a few puzzles since they added the candy, but Bonk 2 is the best game to get first.
